Status of rev 4532?

A number of people noticed 'make check' failures following revision
4532 (these failures didn't show up for the committer, Justin). Then
Mike Pilato and Philip Martin started working to fix those problems.

What's the state of the tree now? Is 'make check' supposed to pass
everywhere again? I ask because I'm about to test other patches :-).

If we're not in a passing state, let's revert 4532 (and subsequent
related changes) until it's working. Or move it to a branch, if that
would make the work easier. Accidents happen, it's no big deal -- but
no need for it to interfere with other work, either.
