 Interesting. Are you all using RedHats db-4.x package? Did RedHat screw
 up it's Berkeley DB RPMs? Or maybe its kernel locking primitives? Ah,
 lots of interesting questions here...
 

I'm running stock kernel and DB4 on RedHat 8.0 with Subversion RPMs. I'm
running a modified DB4 (as close to RedHat 8.0 as will work on RedHat
7.3 ) with RPMs.
