getting feedback from post-commit

While setting up some post-commit backup hooks I realized that there is no
feedback of the post-commit run. i.e. any stdout/stderr it produces is
lost. It doesn't go to server log, it doesn't go to client ..

This is annoying in several situations:

- When you setup post-commit hooks. You have to do trial and error till it
works, logging stuff to /tmp?

- If the post-commit starts to break for some unknown reason (such as a
package going out of date and breaking, bad permissions, etc.), then you
won't know about it..

thoughts?
