I see.

Hm. You want to give people some background to why Subversion is like
it is, by showing them how CVS evolved, don't you?

How about splitting that up into two parts, a general history section
(which also could be a little bit less CVS-centric) and a more
technical section, which could show why version control systems are
like they are today. Like

"A history of version control" and
"A technical history Subversion" (including CVS, of course)

You already have those two parts, just not as cleanly sperated. I am
not good at writing such things, but I am sure, you got the idea.
