I know you're not running fink, Hamilton, but just to keep the story
complete, I think that the "released" fink comes with autoconf 2.52,
but the CVS (or "most up to date" or "unstable") fink comes has 2.53
available, which is what I use.

Fink has stable distributions for automake 1.4p5 and 1.5, and
unstable distributions for 1.5 and 1.6.2. (according to my finds on
my fink tree (which I haven't updated in a couple weeks because my
disk got full)).

(And yes, even with fink it takes me a long time to get svn up and
working on OS X which is why I don't do it every commit anymore.)
