well, i spent a little while looking at this problem, and configure.in
scared me away. i imagine this is probably something that isn't too
hard to fix, for one who has some knowledge of autoconf, but i am not
one of those people.

i've filed an issue (number 617) about it though, so at least we won't
forget.
