Re: 'SVN' to '.svn'

Whew. That's one heck of a thread to read all at once... :-)

+1 on ".svn" instead of "SVN", for what it's worth.

In the past, I mildly preferred the latter, because it makes it easy
to tell when you enter a working copy. But many people prefer
invisibility, and anyway potential case-insensitivity issues make
"SVN" problematic (I'm sure we haven't seen the last of those, even if
we have workarounds for the most recent ones).

Completely concur with Greg[s] and others that we should just stick
with ".svn" and not offer other options. This isn't a private user
preference that affects no one else -- it's a semi-public standard
that eats into the available file/dir namespace, affects `svn import',
and possibly affects some third-party programs as well. So we should
pick a standard and stick with it.

No one seemed to have strong objections to changing it to ".svn", and
the general trend of the list seemed to favor it, so let's go ahead
and make the change. Easy enough to revert if someone gets up the
energy to do a semi-formal survey and discovers a noticeable
preference for the old way. Not that I think this is likely :-), I
just want to make it clear that I'm not intending to shut the door and
lock it by committing the change.

Ben will be posting a mail soon about a few other changes that will
require everyone to do fresh checkouts. Since the SVN->.svn change
will also require people to get new working copies (unless they want
to hand-tweak), Ben says he'll take care of this change too and add it
to the list in that mail.

On an unrelated note, it's really great to come back from vacation and
see so much progress made! I'd not touched an Internet since August
31st, right after the M3 release, and now I see that most of the major
bugs from that time are fixed, we're on commit number 131, things are
going smoothly... Wow. Bravo everyone! I should get back to Russia,
things apparently go better when I'm there. :-)
