Now that I'm thinking about it (thanks, Greg!), I had made a FIX comment
in my encoding code to the effect that I also needed to encode space,
tab, and newline.

Actually, my current PCDATA encoder is probably inadequate, and I'm
concerned that I don't know enough about UNICODE to build one correctly.
Given all of this, I'm probably going to end up doing a base16 on
everything. For the moment it's just too valuable to be able to read the
plain text...
