There's an old Usenet saying "IANAL", or "I Am Not A Lawyer". I've
been involved in freeware software (such as the GPL licensed gcc
compiler and Linux kernel) and open source (such as Subversion and
Apache) contributor for many years, and have never had problems
tweaking source and giving the source modifications to my clients. I
vastly prefer to publish my modifications: I'm negotiating with a
former employer to do just that, speaking with a human resources
representative today.)
I believe that for basic download and usage you're fine. It's
available from numous repositories in numerous forms for numerous
platforms, and I've never seen or even heard of a license problem.
I've personally installed it on several thousand corporate systems, as
an employee and as a contractor, and it's included free in every
version of Linux I've seen for the last 5 years, and most UNIX
operating systems as well.
If you want corporate support, especially for features like high
availability multi-site services and well integrated access
management, I think you want to talk to the company doing corporate
development for Subversion. That's Wandisco at www.wandisco.com. If
you haven't been using source control or have been using a wildly
different one, then you probably want somone competent and familiar
with it to help you get your workflow and policies and the technical
details to support them laid out. A corporate resource (or a
consultant like me, since I'm available until my next role) can be
priceless.
