Slow performance in svn 1.6.1

I just upgraded from subversion client 1.4.4 (OSX Leopard stock) to
1.6.1. I'm hitting a 1.5.5 server over https and notice that 'svn
update' takes twice as long as it did in 1.4.4 (17 sec vs 34 sec, my
project has about 15 externals).

I used tcpdump to monitor the packet count between my machine and the
svn server. 1100 lines with 1.4.4 vs 2300 lines with 1.6.1. Why does
1.6.1 need twice as many network roundtrips to perform the same
operations as 1.4.4? Is there anything I can do to speed this up?
