svn client hangs on svn ls

I have a svn server running on a Ubuntu box. svnserve version 1.5.1 is
installed. The server is protected by a reverse proxy server, that
terminates an SSL-session as well as authenticate the user against
Active Directory.

Subversion clients on Windows (various) as well as the built in svn
1.5.2 client shipped in OS X works fine.

Unfortunately, the svn client on Ubuntu Intrepid 8.10 hangs on 'svn
ls', 'svn up', 'svn co' etc. The hang appears at the very last moment,
the files in f.ex the ls command are displayed, but control is not
returned.

I also tried the svn version as shipped in the Ubuntu Jaunty beta,
which displays similar behaviour.

In Ubuntu Hardy it works fine.

Any ideas?

Thx,
