1.5.5 fails a bunch of checks... intermittently!

I just downloaded and compiled subversion 1.5.5, with subversion-deps-1.5.5, and the latest apr and apr-util (1.3.3 and 1.3.4 respectively) downloaded from apache. Everything seems to compile. I did a "make check" in the apr subdirectory, and it passed everything. Then back up to the main directory, and "make check": it passed tests 1-30, and failed tests 31-56. I immediately ran "make check" again, and this time it failed tests 4,6,8,13,14,19, and 22-56. That again.
Ubuntu Linux, plenty of memory and disk, nobody else using the system.
