Richard, you are correct about subversion running as a service.
According to
http://svn.collab.net/repos/svn/trunk/notes/windows-service.txt svnserve
can run as a windows service anyway. I tried it on my box and it works
just fine. I'm not sure why we can't just package something within the
windows installer (I used SilkSVN) that just does this. Perhaps that
section in the FAQ should simply be replaced with a link to the
windows-service instructions text file.
