That's exactly what I was seeing.

Confusing doesn't even come close to describing these error messages.
From a useability point of view these changes should be made quite a
priority. As a new user I was really confused!!

It actually turned out to be something confusing SVN regarding an
unversioned directory within the working copy ... Removing that and
cleaning / committing the code fixed the problem.
