You remember correctly. We are running Solaris 10 x86 at work and I have
it on a home AMD 6400+ processor and I did not have to install GCC (other
than via the ditribution DVD).

IIRC libgcc (and gcc) are distributed with Solaris 10 onwards.

.... which is not possible on Solaris (like on Mac OS X) due to Sun
deliberately not packaging a static libc (there are good reasons for doing
so
but I don't like it; makes creating some chroot's unnecessary hard).
