"svn: Unexpected end of svndiff input"

Since yesterday, a largeish repository I'm responsible for started
generating an error when trying to do a checkout; it would get about
2/3rds through, and terminate with the subject line when done from the
command line.

When done from Apache using TortoiseSVN:

[Wed Mar 05 14:27:51 2008] [error] [client 192.168.0.124] Provider
encountered an error while streaming a REPORT response. [500, #0]
[Wed Mar 05 14:27:51 2008] [error] [client 192.168.0.124] A failure
occurred while driving the update report editor [500, #185004]
[Wed Mar 05 14:27:51 2008] [error] [client 192.168.0.124] Unexpected end
of svndiff input [500, #185004]

I'm running on Ubuntu Server,
kernel 2.6.15-51,
Apache 2.0.55-4ubuntu2.2,
with Subversion 1.3.1-3ubuntu1.

The FAQ entry on this subject mentions MacOS and is some years old, so
I'm not sure what's going on here. Ideas?
