Well, you could compile the new version with the same prefix as your old
version. It shouldn't be a problem. It just overwrites the files as
needed, but you could end up with unused files in you install dir
(prefix).
Therefore, I would think it is best practice uninstalling the software
before upgrading/reinstalling. Don't forget to backup your configuration
files first :)
