Many projects have used it successfully before having merge tracking.
Sure it's not perfect, but is any software you have?

In other words: most projects will benefit from it, quite a number of
open source projects (especially the smaller ones) can perfectly be
handled without it. If that's the case, then why delay the 1.0
release?
