svn checkout hangs

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to checkout a rather large repository, and a few (10-30, the
number changes every time I try) files into the checkout process, svn
checkout hangs: network output drops to nothing and control-c fails to stop
the process (I've waited up to an hour after hitting ctrl-c; never
recovers). The file that it hangs on is not necessarily big; sometimes just
90k. I can checkout the same repository over my local network just fine; it
only hangs when I try to checkout remotely (I have a DSL connection, so my
upload speed is a little slow).

The hanging occurs at two different remote locations, with different
versions of linux svn clients (one is 1.4.3).

Ideas?
