What's the status of "sparse check out"?

I know about 4 to 6 months ago there was a flurry of discussion about
features for the next minor verses major version release. One feature was
the ability to check out "sparse trees" in other words checkout select files
and subdirectories within a hierarchy. Does anyone have any information
about the status of this feature and when we might hope to see it?
