The approach looks like it might work. I'll have to study it for a
while.

It would so much better to get the problem fixed. Looking in the
original ticket history, it looks like the fix has been recently
postponed due to the putting developers on the history sensitive merging
project. I'd like to have that feature, but I could live without it.
This however seems like a much more presssing problem. Plus, I can
imagine that if history sensitive merging is done first, then to fix
this problem may required some re-coding of history sensitive merging.
