Spot on, I think, Mark: and many thanks to all who've replied to this query.
After receiving your suggestions, I did some more experimenting and
found that the service would start if it ran as a campus admin. The
problem, it turned out, was that other accounts did not have the
necessary permissions for the repository location. So I relocated the
repository, reinstalled the service and all was well.
I really think I have a chance of getting subversion accepted. We've
had nothing but problems with Visual Source Safe. All the developers
are keen. It's just a question of getting it past our "if it's not
Windows we don't want it" and "if you don't have to pay it can't be any
good" managers: all of whom are closely related to Dilbert's PHB. If it
is accepted, it will be a first for F/OSS at my place of work.
Except for some Linux servers they don't know about :)
