Not that anyone's replied, but just for completeness - I've now fixed
this problem.

It seems subversion wasn't installed properly on the server. Sometimes
the webpages showed 1.2 but sometimes they showed 1.1. I'm not sure of
the cause of this problem, but upgrading to 1.4.2 and restarting the box
seems to have fixed it.
