installing subversion in userspace on RHEL4

I'm trying (and failing) to install subversion in userspace on RHEL4.
I've done this successfully several times before, but this box is
hosted at rackspace and might not be the default configuration to
which I am accustomed.

here is my configuration string:

./configure --prefix=/home/dpulp --disable-mod-activation
--without-apache --without-apxs --disable-dav

configure and make finish successfully. 'make check' results in a
stream of failures. and here is the error i get on 'make install':

/home/dpulp/src/subversion-1.3.2/subversion/svnversion/.libs/lt-svnversion:
error while loading shared libraries: libiconv.so.2: cannot open
shared object file: No such file or directory

note that i also get dozens of warnings like this:

libtool: install: warning: relinking `libsvn_client-1.la'
libtool: link: warning:
`/usr/lib/gcc/i386-redhat-linux/3.4.6/../../..//libdb-4.2.la' seems to
be moved
libtool: link: warning:
`/usr/lib/gcc/i386-redhat-linux/3.4.6/../../..//libexpat.la' seems to
be moved

Any ideas?

Much thanks.
