The tarball includes the sources for both the client and the servers. I think
you might be able to do a client-only build using the right flags
for ./configure.

I guess that the 'deps' means dependencies, i.e. libraries that are
technically external to Subversion but that are distributed nonetheless to
satisfy dependencies on systems that don't have those libs already.

I typically install tested binary packages for my OS, which is IMHO the
easiest alternative.
