Problem with checkout after updating to 1.4

hi,

i have a well running repository under Subversion 1.3.2 (linux).
Now i wanted to update to Subversion 1.4.

The installation seems to be ok for me .. i can browse the repository with
webbrowser, i can import files in the repository - but every time i try to
checkout, update or commit i get the error-message:
"Error: REPORT request failed on '/rep/RUSRoot/!svn/vcc/default';Error:
Can't find a temporary directory: Error string not specified yet".

I spend lot of time with googling the problem and read forums - i found
other people reporting the same ... but no postings how to solve this
problem.
Hope this question is not too stupid - i'm new in Subversion :-).
