Did you explicitly set the binary transfer mode in your FTP program?
Probably it is "intelligent" and detects that *.zip has to be
transferred as binary but doesn't recognize the file suffix .gz .
I also noticed that some web browsers try to decompress archives
before writing them to disk which also causes problems.
