I was about to say this didn't work. But, I hadn't done a 'make clean'.
Once I did this IT WORKED. Many many thanks.

Hmm. We've seen that kind of stuff before with the python bindings on
Solaris, but it was fixed before 1.4.0 was released, and it was just
with the python bindings. Can you try passing --enable-shared to
configure and then rebuilding, and see if that helps?
