The incompatibility lies in the format of the working copies, which are
completely under the control of the client. IOW, you can upgrade the server
without any problems, the access protocols are still compatible.

However, you can't use an older client to access a working copy once you
accessed it to 1.4, so mixing clients on the same system can cause problems.
