problem with tortoise checkout

My office (unix/mac/win) is moving to subversion. One of the XP
users, however, is not able to do a tortoise checkout.

A checkout via http:// works fine, but when svn+ssh:// is used we
get a pop-up "Unable to write standard output (stderr)" That user
is checking out to his desktop and he has administrative rights.
To test out the perms, we where able to putty to the repo host and
had no problems to checkout file://...

What could be causing the unable to write error?
