don't update branches in local copy

Hi,

I've set up a large set of repositories using the recommended structure:

robots/
  biped/
    trunk/
    branches/
  quadruped/
    trunk/
    branches/
 ...
  many more subdirs

Lots of people check out the entire repository from the root. But most
people do not need a local copy of every branch of every project. Is
there a clever way to have people download just the trunks and not the
branches in their local copy of the repositories. Like checking out a
repository without checking out all of it's subdirs?
