svn co, but unreadable subdirs

Hi,

given a subversion server on apache, access granted/denied via
AuthzSVNAccessFile.
I have projects where user Alice has the right to read /a/b/ - but not
/a/b/c/ . User Bob has full access to anything under /a/ and therefore no
problems.
If Alice wants to check out /a/ , she ends up in an error "REPORT
request failed on".
My users use tortoisesvn, but I think this is not the problem.
How can Alice' check out /a/b/ without errors?

Rainer
