Indeed, this is the source of confusion. I can not grasp why you claim that
revision number is meaningless? Given that revision number is the *only* way
to access previous history of the project...

Maybe that number is meaningless to you, but for me it makes perfect sence on
my repositories. If you want, this is the "time" coordinate of a project.

If you say that I do not ever need to restore previous revisions that were
checked in, say, a year ago, this amounts in my view to saying that the
revision management system is obsolete. Which the Subversion project proves
is not :).
