Possibility of limiting the number of revisions retained

I know this is unorthodox usage of a version control repository, but ...
it would be nice in certain situations to keep only the last few
revisions in the repository (a specific number, or a number of days'
worth). Can a post-commit script expunge older revisions of a file in
order to accomplish this?
