SVN symbolic links and samba

Hello,
I'm using svn under linux and have a database with symbolic links. I would like to check out this database to a samba server but I keep getting a failure - operation not supported - since samba does not support symlinks.
The question is, how can I make it so that svn doesn't fail? To me, it should treat the samba share as a windows file system and simply throw a copy of the file into the directory.
I've found lots of talk about why this is so, what I want to know is, is there a workaround?
Thanks
