WC Locked

I had shut down the SVN connection for some time. In the meantime a client has tried to update/commit (using TortoiseSVN), and got a 'WC Locked - use Cleanup' kind of message. When he clicked on the 'Cleanup', the message said 'path/.svn/tmp' is missing. When we opened the WC folder, the .svn folder was missing. Any ideas on what could have gone wrong ? Of course, i just deleted the WC and checked out a fresh copy.
