Cannot compile against BerkleyDB4.4

I'm trying to build subversion on Suse 9.3 and I have downloaded the
latest Berkeley DB Release (4.4.16) I compiled it and installed it on
the machine.
configure is complaining that it can't find BerkeleyDB since it is only
looking for 4.3 and below not 4.4.
How can I get the configure script to pick up 4.4?
