Is it possible to tell subversion to follow wc symlinks instead of versioning them?

I would like to be able to split a large working copy across partitions,
by replacing a directory "xyz" with a symlink to a directory on another
partition. I would like to tell subversion to simply follow that
symlink, but it insists on complaining:

svn: The entry 'xyz' is no longer a directory; remove the entry before
updating

Is it possible to tell subversion to simply follow symlinks in a
specific working copy? Is there some other workaround?
