That's pretty much what he said, isn't it? He didn't say, "Shove off,
we're not doing that." He basically said, "It's not as easy as you may
imagine. Patches are welcome." I'm not sure what you were expecting.

Anyway, maybe we should end this meta-discussion, and if you have ideas
for the design and implementation of this change, please start a
discussion on the @dev list.
