Actually, I don't think it is. Most "best practices" documents advise
storing only things that cannot be regenerated. I've never seen it cause
anything but problems in the long term.

See, I was thinking that I knew about a system that would do *just* what
you wanted (well, seemed to want), but I couldn't come up with the name.
But apparently you've been down that path.
