Large svn import: Could not open the requested SVN filesystem

Hi, I'm experiencing problems with importing a directory into svn. The
repository seems to be working fine, but I have recently required to add a
vendor branch for some upstream code to the repository. Following the vendor
branch instructions from the book I did a svn import to load the third party
code.

I get around 200:

A dirname/file

then:

svn:
Could not open the requested SVN filesystem

And it grinds to a halt. Any ideas what could be causing this? I'm working on
getting the server side logs but I'm not sure when I will have those.
