Committing before updating

From: Edward Diener <diener_at_ORsoftware.com>

If I commit changes to a file before doing an update on that file, do my
changes automatically overwrite anybody else's changes to that file which
occurred since my last update ?

I know the fail-safe process for catching conflicts is to update before a
commit. But if I accidentally commit before updating, does anything prevent
me from doing so if other changes have been made in the meantime ?
