Well, if you manage to make it work consistently for your svn
installation, UTF-8 is really the way to go:

http://www.tbray.org/ongoing/When/200x/2003/04/26/UTF

Further more, you can set TextEdit, Xcode and other Mac OS X
applications to use UTF-8 as their default character set encoding.
