Error: Successful edit status returned too soon

I'm somewhat consistently getting the error:

  svn: Successful edit status returned too soon

This occurs when I try to commit more than one (or several) new files
at one time. I can usually get away with commiting one or two files,
but as count (size?) goes up, I get this error.

Can anybody explain this, or offer suggestions on what is going wrong?
