Well, with CVS, you can use rcs.sty (available from CTAN, including
documentation) and the $Revision$ keyword to achieve this.

I've never tried it, but I don't see any reason why you shouldn't be
able to use this with Subversion. Look for "svn:keywords" in the
Subversion book.
