Have you tried running the BerkeleyDB 'db_recover' utility instead?
I'm surprised our FAQ doesn't talk about this, actually. See
http://www.sleepycat.com/docs/utility/db_recover.html, and make sure
to shut off all access to the repository before running it. You
should run it as root, or as a user with complete write access to the
repository's db/ subdirectory.
