Do you particularly need the Berkeley DB back end? I built Subversion
1.1.1 without problems on Aix 5.1 with gcc and just a

$ ./configure --without-berkeley-db --prefix=/opt/subversion-1.1.1 --with-ssl --with-libs=/opt/freeware

I have not tried building it with xlc. I'm not at all familar with Aix,
and in particular with the differences between 4.3.3 and 5.1 - is gcc
available for 4.3.3? Would it help if I tried building with xlc on
5.1?
