svn much slower than cvs

We use now Subversion for our Websites-Repository.
It is quite huge, nearly 1GB (many images, pdfs, flash etc...)

and so a checkout took over 20 Minutes!

with CVS it took us about 2 Minutes...

I suppose this is because svn has to create the base-copy in the
.svn-folder?

what could we do to speed things up?

an update takes quite long too! (much longer than with CVS)

Any ideas/suggestions on that?

PS: we are connected to the svn-server over an ethernet connection
