svnadmin verify hangs

I am having a problem accessing one of several repositories on a freeBSD
4.9 system with subversion 1.05 The repositories are normally accessed
via https and have been working fine for months.

I tried

svnadmin verify /svn/private

to see if anything was up with the repository in question and the
command hangs. Anyone got any idea what's going on and how it might occur?

Assuming it's broken is it ok to run svn recover without the verify?
