Jim Hague was kind enough to provide me with working binaries, which he placed on
http://www.bear-cave.org.uk/aix/

Jim, I hope you don't mind I am passing this on... they worked well for me.

I assume John meant he has no rights to execute the compilers on the system... if that is the case, creating those directories in one's home directory won't help much.

Besides that, the subversion compilation and installation process is SFU on any UNIX or UNIX-like platform besides Linux.

There is no such thing as "ldconfig" on AIX. In fact, the whole process of building shared objects on AIX is way different... IBM has good documentation available.
